There are several different areas that can be put on a tennis court. The two most common types of surfaces used worldwide are clay courts and hard.
The clay can vary in color from the sand, to red, green or gray, depending on where it is built and has supplies in the region. The clay courts are nice and soft on the feet, but it has to be swept and watered regularly to keep the clay from blowing. Many private clubs have an automatic sprinkler system to go every night after closing for the water down. Then, the clay also has time to dry before the court opens its members the following day.

The hard court is usually made of different materials depending on the area of the country and if it is an indoors or outdoors. The indoor facilities are usually made of asphalt, while outdoor facilities are made of concrete. Both are usually painted with a textured substance, rubber to help provide cushioning for the feet and ball bounce. These are easy to clean with a blower or a broom to keep debris out of it.

Other areas are also used. These include grass surfaces, but these are more expensive to maintain, the ball does not bounce very high and it’s hard on the knees. Synthetic turf surfaces are also being used – similar to the material used in artificial turf football fields in the United States.

The different surfaces make tennis a little different for each player. That’s why some players prefer one surface to another. It could also be the reason for some of the surfaces are different in major tournaments to ensure that everyone has a chance to advance to the finals without being hampered by a surface type or another.
